Eat Well MCR’s story:
Eat Well MCR was started Chef Mary-Ellen McTague, in April 2020 when she decided to use the produce from her restaurant, which had been forced to close, to cook meals for people in need.
What started out as one woman on a mission soon became a collective of chefs, hospitality professionals and volunteers from across Manchester producing up to 1000 meals a week.
People that Eat Well MCR support include children and families experiencing homlessness temporarily housed in hotels, women taking refuge in sheltered accommodation, food-banks looking after families and single parents in dire straits, and schools whose families are experiencing food poverty and inequality. With hospitality at our core, we wanted to draw on our expertise of generously sharing beautifully prepared food with others. With this in mind our meals are intended to provide more than just calories. We want our meals to give recipients that same feeling you get when you sit down to enjoy a meal cooked by someone else, without worrying about washing the pots or whether you can afford the ingredients. We also aim to provide choice, one of the first things to be taken away when you’re living with poverty.
Our next goal is to reach 100,000 meals for Manchester. The First Chop x Eat Well MCR collaboration is a fantastic contribution to our efforts.
